ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems)

Urban transportation corridors are becoming increasingly crowded. At the same time, cities are reaching the maximum possible build-out on their real estate dedicated to roadways. An alternative to building more lanes of traffic is the Intelligent Transportation System, or ITS.

ITS can allow additional traffic lanes to be routed in the direction of the heaviest traffic flow (commuter rush-hour), depending on the time of day (Reversible Lane Management or Lane Transfer System). This routing can be easily accomplished with the help of technical devices, such as cameras, traffic signals, gates/barriers and variable message signs.

Intelligent transportation systems also support electronic toll collection, where toll gate sensors read a vehicles electronic signature and automatically debit the commuter's balance.
